The Complete Security and Privacy Solution for Web Browser Users

   Secure IE Test Details

 How does this security risk assessment work?

    The security and privacy tests check your browser's settings. Based on these checks, you get a Personalized Risk Assessment that is either DISABLED  or UNPROTECTED on the different measures.

    The Javascript test detects whether Javascript is turned on. Web sites can do many tricks with Javascript such as:
    * open unauthorized browser windows
    * silently redirect your browsing to a different site
    * send you malicious files
    * track your browsing session

    The ActiveX test detects whether ActiveX is turned on by your browser. Hackers and malicious sites can use ActiveX Controls to gain control of your computer and run arbitrary commands and programs on your computer including:
    * delete files from your computer
    * send emails from your computer
    * read and copy files and personal information stored on your computer

    The Web Bugs test determines whether third-party cookies are enabled on your computer. Third-party cookies are used to track your browsing across multiple sites. Note that, on some computers, this test may show the result UNDETERMINED.

    The Cookies test detects whether cookies are turned on in your browser. Websites use cookies to track your browsing - to track which websites and pages you visit.

 How can I tune my browser so that it is not 'UNPROTECTED'?

    Ideally, you should have Javascript, VB Script, and Cookies disabled for all web sites, except for the ones you trust - perhaps www.mcafee.com or www.secureie.com

    Depending on the browser, you use you can use a combination of the Control Panel, and rebooting to adjust your settings. For example, if you use Internet Explorer, you can change your security settings as follows:

    To disable Javascript and VB Script - and therefore be SAFE on the tests:
    1. Select Tools, then Internet Options in Internet Explorer
    2. Then click on the Advanced tab
    3. Then uncheck all Java related items (listed under Microsoft VM)
    4. Clear your browser cache
    5. Reboot your PC

    Now, when you visit the test page, you will see that the Javascript vulnerability reads "SAFE" instead of "UNPROTECTED"

    To disable Cookies - and therefore be SAFE instead of UNPROTECTED on the cookies test:
    1. Select Tools, then Internet Options in Internet Explorer
    2. Click on the Security tab
    3. Click on "Custom Level"
    4. Set all options under Cookies to "Disable"
    5. Clear your Temporary Internet Files
    6. Clear your browser cache
    7. Reboot your PC

    Now, when you visit the test page, you will see that the Cookies vulnerability reads "SAFE" instead of "UNPROTECTED"

    The big problem with tuning Internet Explorer as described above:
    Javascript, VB Script, and Cookies are disabled for ALL websites you visit. You will need to enable Javascript, VB Script, and Cookies for many essential websites - for example your bank's website,
    www.mcafee.com, www.secureie.com, to function properly.
